Insects are amongst the most diverse and successful group of organisms on the planet. There is an estimated 900,000 to 1,500,000 species worldwide, making up a staggering 80-89% of all named animal species. They have a long history of co-evolution with trees and plants. Insects provide important roles in nutrient cycles, pollination and seed dispersal, and, in some cases, even provide protection to trees. Insects in turn use trees for food, shelter, ovipositing, and overwintering.
“There are situations, especially with invasive species where there is no evolutionary history, where arborists need to step in to prevent insects from killing trees or causing severe damage.”
Many treatment programs will have several arborceutical options. To ensure great results in controlling insects it is important to utilize all of the following:
1. Diagnose the problem, identify the species
2. Use the best arborceutical for the type and degree of infestation
3. Employ accurate treatment timing
4. Utilize the best treatment method (spray, soil application, or tree injection)
